Cardiff is the capital and the largest city in Wales. It was made a city in 1905, and proclaimed capital of Wales in 1955. Since the 1990s Cardiff has seen significant development with a new waterfront area at Cardiff Bay, which contains the new Welsh Assembly Building and the Millennium Centre (theatre and musical events).

The city hosts a number of international sporting venues including the Millennium Stadium (rugby union and football) and the SWALEC Stadium (cricket). Cardiff is a major tourist centre with approximately 12 million visitors per year. It also boasts a large and varied array of shopping opportunities and ranks amongst the top ten retail centres in the UK.
